Some of Penfolds’ finest riesling parcels in the early 1970s were bottled under the Autumn Riesling label. Current Koonunga Hill vintages acknowledge the inaugural 1971 Autumn Riesling release by closely adhering to the original packaging, with a fitting retro label and screwcap.
The Koonunga Hill Autumn Riesling, like its siblings, aims to deliver the quality, value and consistency for which this range is renowned. An expressive, highly aromatic riesling. Floral and citrus notes combine with crisp, mouth-watering acidity to make this a versatile wine suitable both as an aperitif and as a partner for richer seafood dishes.

Vintage conditions
Vintage 2022 shared many of the hallmarks of the very strong 2021 vintage. Winter rainfall was healthy, and La Niña conditions favoured South Australia. Spring temperatures were generally cooler than average, with good rainfall. Conditions were optimal for budburst and fruit set, with only a few isolated frost incidents. Mild weather prevailed over summer, resulting in a long, slow growing season and a leisurely harvest — the latest in ten years for the Clare Valley. These conditions were very conducive to growing quality grapes with strong varietal characteristics and bracing natural acidity.
Colour
Light straw with a light green rim
Nose
Enticing varietal aromatics include perfumed bath salts and florals, overlaid with candied lime zest and hints of fennel. The faintest suggestion of curry spice and curry leaf emerges with a swirl. Gorgeously fresh and zesty.
Palate
Very fresh and limey — kaffir lime juice with Tahitian lime curd. A delicious note of exotic Thai basil and mint. The finish is soft and nicely framed by refreshing, chalky acid.
